Your dog at your wedding: 3 ways to involve them without stressing them

There’s an image that always comes back: a dog walking towards the altar, incredibly elegant, carrying the rings. It’s a beautiful scene, and I understand why so many people want it. But before thinking about the accessory, there is a more important question: will that moment be beautiful for them too?
If your dog is calm, if they do not get overwhelmed by twenty people talking at the same time and an aunt shouting “Congratulations!”, then yes, their presence can turn a beautiful day into something unforgettable. But the secret lies in giving them a role that respects who they are, not who you wish they were for the photos.

Here are three suggestions designed with them in mind:

1. Emotional support (or: the only one who does not ask if you are nervous)

The minutes before the ceremony are strange. Some people cry, some laugh nervously, some check their watch every thirty seconds. In all that chaos, your dog is the only living being who will not ask questions, will not give unsolicited advice and will not judge you if your hands are sweaty.

Being near them while you are getting ready has an almost physical calming effect: it lowers tension and brings you back to the present. They are an anchor.

2. The Guest Greeter: a four-legged welcome

If your dog is the kind who, when new people arrive, seems to say “Finally, I have been waiting for you!”, this role is perfect for them.

They do not have to do anything special. They just have to be themselves, welcoming guests with that tail wag that melts even the grumpiest uncle. It is a very simple way to immediately create a relaxed atmosphere.

3. The Ring Bearer: the moment everyone will remember

This is the most important role, the one that will make guests hold their breath. It is also the one that requires the most preparation.

No improvisation: you need at least one full rehearsal at the ceremony location, and someone to walk them to the altar if necessary. The rings must be secured so they cannot fall (yes, it has happened, and no, it is not as funny as it sounds).

But is your dog really ready?

Before deciding anything, stop for a second. Do not think about the photos, do not think about how beautiful it would look. Think about them.

Ask yourself: are they comfortable around strangers or do they tend to avoid them? Do they get scared by loud noises? Can they stay focused even when there is confusion? Are they used to new places?

If the answer to any of these questions is “not really”, it does not mean you love them less. It means you know them well enough to protect them. Leaving them at home, or involving them only for a short and controlled moment, is a choice made out of love, not a renunciation.

If instead you feel they are ready, that this experience can be beautiful for them too, then the next step is thinking about how to keep them comfortable and safe , as well as elegant. And if you have doubts about their temperament, speak with a dog trainer before the big day: they will help you understand what is right for them.

A hug,
Chiara
